TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - The Japanese and US governments have agreed to hold a first round of high-level economic talks in Tokyo in mid-September, the Nihon Keizai newspaper cited sources close to the matter as saying. The talks, to cover structural reform and the cleanup of bad loans in Japan along with trade and macroeconomic issues, were first suggested at the June meeting between Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and President George W Bush. Participants from the US will include senior officials from the White House, the State Department, the Treasury Department and the Commerce Department along with the country's trade representative, the newspaper said. Japanese delegates will include representatives from the Foreign Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the Trade Ministry. The discussions, expected to be scheduled around September 12, will likely cover not only bilateral issues but also multilateral ones such as details of a new round of World Trade Organization talks. Participants in the talks are also expected to discuss arrangements for a meeting between Koizumi and Bush when the US president visits Japan in October, the newspaper said.
